Midnight Sun Challenge Chapter 1.25 "Friend or Foe"

Friend or Foe

Eddy was having the best show of his career.  The fans were insane with their passion for the music, jumping in time to the beat and singing along with him with animated expressions.  The fans were clapping, waving their arms to the rhythm and the women were doing their best to get his undivided attention with all their flirty ways.  The lights twinkled brighter than he had ever seen and as he looked over at his band mates, he saw lit up expressions on their faces that told him they were having as much fun as he was.  He had just begun a new set and was feeling more alive then he had in a long time, when he heard this ringing.  It started off quietly at first but the more he concentrated on it, the louder it became.....

Eddy woke with a start to the ringing of his cell phone on his bedside table.  Throwing his left arm up over his eyes to block out the sunlight, he reached over with his right hand and grabbed his phone.

"What." he answered

"Wakey wakey Eddy.  Do you know what time it is?"

"What do you want Jerry?"  Jerry was the manager for the band and usually not so concerned about his sleeping habits unless it involved getting the mates up and onto the tour bus.  Which it didn't today.

"What do I want?  What DO I want.  Hmmm.  That is a very good question.  Feeling a little hung over I presume?"

Eddy sat up and swung his legs over the side of the bed and rubbed his face with his hand in an attempt to clear the fog in his brain.  Yes, he was definitely a little hung over, if the way his head was pounding was any indication.

"Is there a point coming anytime soon?  Cause if there is can you just get to it so I can get back to sleep!"

"You want me to get to the point.  Fine.  How's this?  Are you fucking stupid?  What on earth did you think you were doing?"

Eddy rubbed his face a little more trying to get his brain to think a little more clearly.  Taking a big breath he said sleepily "This would make a little more sense Jerry if I had any idea what you were talking about."

"Think Eddy.  What do you remember about last night?  Does kissing Katie and dancing together provocatively in front of the paparazzi ring any bells?"

Eddy was instantly awake as panic began to set in.  Eddy strained to think back to the previous evening to the events that Jerry was talking about and then it slapped him like a bad memory in the face.

"Shit! Shit!"  Eddy jumped off the bed, slapped his forehead for his stupidity, and turned around to face the bed.  There in his bed was Katie Walsh.

"Fuck! Fuck fuck fuck!"  Eddy paced around the room panicked now about events that he couldn't quite remember.  "What am I going to do"

"Getting the picture now aren't you" Jerry replied.  "You fucked up real good.  All that work we did planning and working the plan to get Maya into your life and you go and blow it on a groupie!  Well done!"

Eddy stopped pacing around the room, panic had turned to anger.  "Shut up Jerry!  Maya isn't just a plan and she's not just some girl!  Shit I really fucked this up.  Has it made the papers yet?"

"Eddy it made social media within a minute of the shots being taken.  If Maya has seen them you're fucked.  Actually you're fucked either way.  Now figure out a way to fix it before its too late!"

Eddy closed his phone and looked down at Katie in his bed.  It suddenly occurred to him that she wasn't naked, at least he didn't think she was.  So pulling back the covers, slowly to not wake her, he discovered that she was fully dressed.  So dressed that she was still wearing her shoes. Straining to think about the evening before, all the memories just seemed beyond his reach, which probably had a lot to do with this pounding in his head.  So flipping open the phone, he went in search for any news of last nights party, and it didn't take him long to find.  Cringing at the site of the pics, he once again tried to remember exactly what had happened.

He remembered arriving at the party around eight thirty and someone asked him to play an impromptu show, which he did, for about an hour.  But after that it all seemed a little hazy.

He was about to jump in the shower, when his phone beeped indicating he had a message.  Dreading what he was about to hear, he put the phone up to his ear and closed his eyes.  The message was from Maya and she was obviously very juiced.

Eddy.  Eddyyyy.  My Eddyyy.  Isn't that what you said to me in your message?  My Maya you called me.  Well if I am your Maya then what are you doing with that slut groupie?  What gives you the nerve to cheat on me? Me!  I hope she wasss gooood Eddy.  But if you want me to be your Maya then that bitch had better hit the road, cause if she is still with you when I see you next then we are through.  You hear me Eddy?  Through.  Finito!  Done like dust!  You decide!

And then the phone went dead.  Eddy groaned as he closed his phone and tossed it on the bed.  He couldn't believe he had done that to Maya.  She didn't deserve that.  Eddy sat back down on the bed and hung his head.  What on earth was he going to do?  How was he going to fix this?

"Morning Eddy.  How are you feeling?"

Eddy groaned.  Great someone else he had to let down.

"Katie.  Look.  About last night."

"What about last night.  You were juiced pretty badly last night.  What has gotten into you?  Maya troubles?"

"Doesn't matter.  Katie, look.  I'm sorry about last night.  Really sorry.  I'm not usually this bad a guy.  But we can never be more than we have always been.  Do you think maybe we could just be friends?"

"Ummm.  What are you talking about?" Katie looked at him more than a little confused.

"Ok.  Ah, there really is no good way to say this, but, sleeping with you was a mistake.  I'm involved with Maya.  You understand that right?"

"Yeah, but Eddy last night-"

"Last night was last night.  Today is today.  I would prefer if we don't ever speak about this again.  To anyone.  Can you do that for me Katie?"

"Eddy!  We didn't woo hoo if that is what you are talking about!"  Katie burst into laughter.  "You really don't remember last night at all do you?"

Eddy was stunned and then relieved.  "No woo hoo.  With you?"

"No woo hoo with anyone!  You were so juiced that I practically had to carry you into the house.  Then you asked me to stay with you.  So I did.  You kept mumbling something about Maya, this and that, none of which made any sense to me.  I mean come on Eddy.  Does it look like we had woo hoo?"  she indicated by pointing out the obvious that they were both still dressed.  Eddy was so excited that he hugged her.

"Then wait.  What about all those pictures?  The kiss?"

"Oh well that.  Yeah I found out later that was one of those stupid party game dares.  I'm not going to lie to you Eddy. When you started coming on to me I thought you had finally come to your senses and decided to come my way.  So I was really disappointed in the end.  But I have no desire to come between you and Maya if that is really what you want.  Is it?  Cause the way you were talking last night I'm not sure that you really do."

"I do.  Maya and I are really good as a couple.  Together we will go places, do a lot of things together."

"Hmmm.  That's interesting," Katie replied as she grabbed her coat and walked to the door.  "Cause in that statement, I don't hear anything about love." and she closed the door leaving Eddy standing there pondering her words.

Midnight Sun Challenge Chapter 1.24 "Maya For Christmas"

Maya For Christmas

The atmosphere around university campus and at the Sorority house was one of joy and jubilation. Final exams were complete and the students were busy packing to head home for two weeks of Christmas holidays for a much needed break with family, friends, good food and of course presents. All was greatly needed after all the hard work students had put in over the past three months.  Maya was also excited about the end of the semester, but couldn't quite catch the same level of anticipation as everyone else, for she had no family or friends to be with this holiday season.  Her family in China hadn't quite forgiven her for leaving her first husband and she really had no desire at all to return to China.  She could just imagine how tense that would be.  Her only motivation for going home would be to see her best friend Sun.  Eddy was just too busy this holiday season to even find the time to see her.  With rehearsals, interviews, travel time and his actual shows, his schedule was literally booked from the time he woke till the time his head hit the pillow at the end of his very busy day.  She had no desire to spend time riding on a tour bus with four guys and all their disgusting ways.  Considering her last encounter with Eddy, she wasn't sure she wanted to spend any time with him.  She hadn't heard a word from him since that morning on the beach in Sunlit Tides and she knew this was his attempt to force her to come to him.  Which she had no intention of doing anytime soon, for she was of the same mindset as he was and just as stubborn.

Then of course there was Ian and Jin.  She had to admit that they hadn't been far from her thoughts recently.  She found herself perusing toy websites in the past few days thinking of her son.  Buying her son a toy wouldn't be fair to her him and would only help to alleviate some of her guilt she was carrying around for walking out on him.  She had no idea what to buy him anyway, for lack of knowing anything about her only son.

Maya was extremely nervous about her upcoming trip to Sunset Valley for her Christmas break. Never having travelled alone, Maya had to learn how to make all her travel plans on her own. Namely, somewhere to stay for the two weeks she would be in the Valley to complete the mural. It wasn't the kind of town that had a resort or hotel so she was struggling with where to stay until she received a phone call from Nancy Landgraab.  Nancy, who was a member of the hospital board, offered her a room in her home in exchange for a donation to the hospital.  Maya readily agreed, breathed a sigh of relief and thanked her profusely for the offer. Later when she looked at a map of the Valley, she realized the Landgraab estate was a little further out of town than she would like but at least she wouldn't have to hit the gym the whole time she was there. The Landgraab estate was high on a hill so walking to town was not going to be a problem, but the walk back was going to prove quite the workout! It was an exciting offer, knowing the wealthy status of the family, she was going to see how the other half lived!  Since she had won the lottery she had been living at the Sorority House and attending university, which weren't exactly the right atmospheres for living the high life.  She had benefited from her celebrity status with gifts and invites to the right parties, but had never really seen how the upper class lived.  She was hopeful that she could learn from Nancy Landgraab, what it really meant to be a lady of wealth.

Maya had a goal to be able to complete the painting in a weeks time so she would be able to explore the town and relax before heading back for her next semester of university. She did not want to spend her entire time under a tent in a hallway painting a large wall.  She had been informed that the painting would be kept under wraps until the reveal date, which was scheduled for the day before New Years.  So if she finished the painting quickly, she still would have about four or five days to just be on her own, maybe head to the spa, do some shopping and perhaps sleep in for a change.

She was really looking forward to getting started on the mural she had worked so hard at planning. She thought she had chosen a good theme for the ward itself and the atmosphere the hospital staff worked hard to create for those children who were ill, especially over the Christmas holidays.  She couldn't wait to showcase her talent to the public and ultimately the art world.  A mural in a children's ward was no Sistine Chapel, but she planned on putting her whole self into every brush stroke and every custom mixture of colour she chose.   A hospital was a very scary place for an adult alone, but for a child! White hallways, fluorescent lights and metal furnishings didn't exactly inspire hope, yet hope was exactly what a child needed to get better.  She hoped that she could at least inspire a little bit of that with her creation and allow children to escape from the misery of being unwell by using their imagination.  For herself, she hoped that this commission would open doors to many more opportunities in the art world, even if they were volunteer, unpaid, or like the hospital painting, for a good cause.

The hustle and bustle in the Sorority House was adding to her nervous state, so she locked herself in her room and took to her art easel to calm her nerves.  Along with all the packing and semester papers hitting the trash, the house was being prepped for a formal party to happen just after dinner.  Kegs were being positioned around the house and various dishes were being prepared in the kitchen by a handful of dorm mates.  Virtually everyone had been invited and it was shaping up to be the the party of the year. Several bets were already in play about who would get juiced, who would be streaking and who would end up not sleeping alone in their own bed. She wanted no part of any of that this time although she had decided to attend the party.  She didn't want to snub anyone for everyone had all been quite good friends to her as she made this cultural adjustment to her new life.  A little bit of partying probably wasn't a bad idea to blow off a little steam and alleviate some of this pent up nervous energy that was multiplying by the hour. A little after eight Maya was dressed in her new Rose Floral dress from another new designer, perfumed and dusted with her hair up and jewelry to match.  Taking one last look in the mirror, she turned and went in search of her dorm mates and the best part of the party.  It really was a beautiful evening with a sky full of bright stars and a slight warm breeze that didn't even require a wrap to stay warm.  Because of that most of the party had ended up in the backyard and around the pool, where a few of the guests had even stripped down to their skivvies to enjoy the warm water.  Luckily none were swimming in the nude, which was good due to the amount of paparazzi that were also in attendance at the party.  She had lost count of the amount of celebrities or important people that were in attendance and she mingled through the crowd trying to make time to speak to each and every one of them.  No longer did she have to introduce herself and make a good impression.  Thanks to Eddie and his celebrity status, Maya had an even higher celebrity status than most of the celebs in attendance making it her place to accept or turn away all those that tried to speak to her.  It was a daunting task and she found the small talk dreary.  Not many of the guests were interested in  Maya's passion for art and she wasn't the least bit interested in sports.  Yet she tried to be as polite as she could while looking interested in all their attempts to gain her favour.  One thing she did notice, was that not one male made any attempts to flirt or hit on her and she found that puzzling.  She herself couldn't do any flirting for fear it would end up in the next day's paper, but it still would have been nice to have someone at least try!  She was beginning to wonder if she had a stamp on her forehead that read 'taken-back off'!

Even though the night was young, she was surprised to see that no one had gotten completely juiced as they usually did.  However by midnight many of the guest were felling quite buzzed and the silly party games had begun.  Maya had successfully avoided the juice kegs and politely turned down offers of drinks which allowed her to enjoy the antics of her fellow party goers with a clear head.  She had seen quite a few naked backsides run by her of both men and women and thought it absolutely hilarious!

Shortly after midnight, Maya's cell phone rang and she tried to find a quiet spot to hear the person on the other end.

"Hello?"

"Maya.  Myyyyyy Maya.  Mayyya I sho shorry."

"Eddy?  Is that you?"

"Mayyya.  I sssoorry.  Please you just..."  Then all she heard was loud music on the phone which drowned out his words until the line went dead.

Maya looked at the phone, shook her head and put the phone away.  Eddy was obviously juiced and if that was his version of an apology then he could forget it!  No deal!  It was going to take something more and a sober something at that!  Hearing Eddy's voice had put a damper on Maya's mood and she decided that for her the party was over.  She was in the middle of saying her goodbyes to everyone when her phone rang again.  Figuring it would be Eddy again, she was reluctant to answer it, but as it just kept on ringing, she finally relented.

"Hello," she answered with a hint of annoyance.

"Maya.  It's Chloe."  Chloe had left early that morning to make her way home before Maya had woken up and she was very happy to hear from her.

"Chloe!  I'm sorry I missed you this morning!"

"Never mind that.  Maya have you been on line tonight?"

"No. Why?"  Maya asked

"Oh geez.  Ok.  I'm sending you a link.  Open it and take a look."

"I don't understand.  What is this about Chloe?"

"Maya.  I'm really sorry to be the one to tell you this, but it's all over social media.  Maya, Eddy was photographed at a party this evening kissing another girl.  I think he is cheating on you Maya."

"Chloe.  That's not possible.  Eddy is supposed to be on the road right now travelling to his next gig.  There is no way he is at a party."

"Maya, don't shoot the messenger OK.  Just open the link."

Maya took the phone from her ear, opened the link on social media and gasped.  Sure enough, Chloe was right.  Plain as day, there was Eddy with another woman in his arms kissing her passionately. What was worse, was Maya recognized the woman.  She was from his entourage and had been travelling around with the band the whole time he had been gone.   Betrayal ripped through her like a red hot double edge knife.  Maya gripped her stomach and doubled over in pain desperately trying to catch her breath.  It couldn't be.  It just couldn't be.  That had to be someone else.  She just couldn't believe Eddy would cheat on her after all they had been to one another. One little fight did not justify cheating on her!  Shock over took her body and her mind worked it over fiercely trying to come up with some explanation as to why this could have happened.  She picked up her phone and looked at the picture again. Without a doubt it was definitely Eddy.  She would know that tattoo on his arm anywhere.  Now the phone call made sense.  He knew she was going to find out and thought to minimise the damage.  She wondered exactly what he had planned on telling her before the line went dead.

"Maya.  Maya!  Maya are you there?"  Chloe's desperate please finally cut through the fog in her brain and she put the phone back up to her ear.

"How could he...  why would he.  I,  I,  don't understand."

"I'm sorry Maya.  I'm so sorry to have to be the one to tell you this.  I just didn't want you to go off to the Valley and be told by some vindictive paparazzi.  I know how I would feel if that happened to me.  Look, I have to go and I'm really sorry about that.  Don't do anything stupid tonight. Just turn off your phone and lay low for the night.  Once you get to Sunset Valley, you can hide for a while until you decide what you want to do."

"Yeah," was all Maya could seem to say.

"Call me tomorrow when you make it there and get settled in with the Landgraabs.  Bye."

Maya closed the phone and just stared at it for a moment. She was tempted to open the social link again to look at it one more time, just to see, to know it really was all real. But she followed Chloe's advice and turned off her phone.  She looked around the party and discovered that a lot of the guests had already cleared out.  Looking back at her phone, she threw it across the yard and burst into heart wrenching tears.  Like the vultures they are, the paparazzi descended on her with their cameras snapping pictures.

She quickly pulled herself together, gave them a look of disgust and marched her way over to the juice keg. Pouring herself a drink, she gulped it down, and scanned the room. Choosing her mark she walked over to the first handsome young man she saw and asked him to slow dance.  Two can play at that game Eddy, she thought.  See how you feel when you see this in the papers.

When the song was over, she poured herself another drink and then another.  Scanning the room again, she found her next mark.

At this point Maya was feeling pretty good and quite inhibited.  The party took on a new life and people were soon jumping and dancing to the music and singing along to the songs. The kegs were quickly filled and refilled and Maya continued to drink to calm her aching heart and the stabbing pain in her belly, both of which were feeling pretty good by the time she had downed her sixth drink.  And as all good parties go, two things usually occur.  First the police showed up and started a fight with Maya over the noise level.

She was a little pissed at first but using her newly charming ways Maya easily got the police officer to not only allow them to continue to party, but to join the party herself.  Secondly, Maya in her uninhibited state decided it was a little time for streaking.

Which once again was caught on camera but at that moment she just didn't care.

"You want to cheat on me?  Really! Cheat on this!" Maya slurred to no one in particular while dragging her hands down her side and posing provocatively.  She stumbled over to the area she had thrown her phone and scooped it off the grass.  Taking considerable time to dial Eddy's number, she swayed as she waited for him to pick it up.

"I got the voice mail." she said to the body next to her, not really knowing who it was.  At the sound of the tone she left Eddy a piece of her mind and turned off her phone again.

Or at least she thought she did, but she really didn't care.  Next thing she knew someone had thrown their arm around her waist and was leading her to her room.  She vaguely remembered being tucked into bed and someone shutting the door.  And then the world went black.

Midnight Sun Challenge Chapter 1.23 "Do What It Takes"

Do What It Takes

Ian had taken Saturday to head into town and run some last minute errands for Christmas.  He had picked up a shiny new firetruck to give to Jin as a present and a beautiful necklace for Maya.  He left Jin with the local child minder, so he wouldn't have him in tow and his arms would be free.  He just had the local grocer to pop into and then he was done.  He headed straight for the back of the store and picked up the essentials he still needed for Christmas dinner.  The rest he would order online and have delivered to the island.  His arms were full with boxes of dressing, a large turkey, a can of cranberry sauce, an apple pie and a can of whipped cream as topping for the pie.  He was just passing the magazine rack when he stopped dead in his tracks.  He picked up the magazine that had caught his attention, which was being featured next to the "mens" magazines and held his breath.  Not wanting to lose his cool in the store, he casually added it to his pile of items and walked up to the store clerk.

"Oh man, this is a great issue!" the clerk said to Ian.  "Just wait till you see the full spread on the inside!"

"Really," Ian said nonchalantly hoping to deter the clerk.

"Oh yeah.  Maya is hot!  Just the thought of that tight round derriere get my juices flowing.  Man if only I could get her alone for just fifteen minutes.  Dream come true I tell ya."

Ian was stunned into silence.  Visions of grabbing the clerk by the back of his head and slamming his face down on the counter suddenly became overwhelming and very tempting.

"Have a nice day," Ian said to the clerk and stormed out to his car.  He placed the items on the front passenger seat and took a deep breath before opening the magazine.  He instantly became fighting angry and threw the magazine down onto the floor of his car.  He slammed his palms on the steering wheel and laid his forehead on his hands.  At that moment Ian was just as pissed at himself as he was at Eddy.  He knew just where the idea for this magazine issue had come from.  Maya wouldn't have thought of this, let alone set it up, and he certainly couldn't see her agreeing to this easily. Pissed at himself because apparently he wasn't as clever as he thought.  Ian had been systematically arranging music gigs for Eddy's band, to keep Eddy away from Maya.  He had arranged for Eddy to be gone for six weeks, which also included over the Christmas holidays.  It wasn't hard to do.  All it took was money and connections and he had both thanks to his very wealthy clients.  Somehow Eddy had found the time to not only get together with Maya, but plan and implement this, this, piece of garbage as well.  So Ian was just going to have to double his efforts to keep them apart.

Ian was just happy that Jin wasn't with him today.  He didn't want his son to see him so distraught and he certainly wouldn't have wanted him to see this magazine.  So he scooped it up off the floor of his car, walked to the nearest trash can and dropped it in.  Then he walked back into the grocer, bought every copy on the rack and the biggest slushy he could buy.  He dropped all the copies into the trash can upside down, pushed them down and dumped his blue raspberry slushy all over the top.  Tossing in the cup, he wiped his hands clean and walked away.  He couldn't stop the issue from being shown around the world, but he could stop it from being seen in this small town.

He set his mind to work on a new plan for breaking up Maya from Eddy.  Now that he was a bit calmer and could think more clearly, he realized that this magazine article actually worked in his favour.  Maya couldn't be happy about this and it was his hope that it would help to drive a wedge between Eddy and Maya.  But in the meantime he was going to do his best to keep Eddy on the other side of the world.  As much as he was tempted to try and get Maya to spend Christmas with him and Jin, he knew it was still too soon.  So he had arranged for her to be in Sunset Valley painting a mural at the local hospital.  It originally had been offered to him, but once he showed Maya's paintings to the board, they readily agreed to make the offer to her.  So Eddy would be in Bridgeport and Maya in Sunset Valley.  A very long airplane ride away. He had one more "goodie" up his sleeve for Maya that he knew she was going to love.  Then he thought it would almost be time for Jin to see his mother. Hopefully this time everything would go according to plan.

Midnight Sun Challenge Chapter 1.22 "Eyes Wide Opened"

Eyes Wide Opened

Maya had been completely thrown off balance by the arrival of Ian into her newly established life and she couldn't understand what his thoughts or his motivation was.  There had been no real discussion between the two of them at all.  No confrontation, no accusations, no anger.  It was not at all the way she thought their first encounter would be.  She had wondered why she never heard from him after she left, why he didn't call or come running to bring her back.  From that she surmised that he was just too angry with her, and she figured he must have decided to never speak to her again.  But these kind gestures?  How was she supposed to deal with that?

It had been five days since she had received those flowers and in that time she had only heard from Eddy once.  Two days into his travel time to his next concert, the tour bus had broken down on some back country road.  No residents in site and no cell phone service, the group had walked half a day before they came upon a small town with an ever smaller garage.  It was quite late by the time they arrived and as there was no hotel, the owner of the shop offered them the rooms in the back for the group to stay.  Joe, the owner of the shop made arrangements the next morning for the bus to be towed to his garage.  It took 2 days to fix but by then, Eddy's cell battery had died and the shop owner didn't allow for long distance calls.  They finally got on their way far too late on that second day, so Eddy waited till the following morning to let Maya know where he was.

Maya was beside herself with worry.  It wasn't like Eddy to be so inconsiderate and in that time she had convinced herself that something horrible must have happened.  She envisioned all kinds of terrible scenarios, and worse, doubts about Eddy started creeping in.  At first she blamed it on Ian.  She was perfectly happy until the day he came back into her life.  She considered calling him and asking him to please leave her alone, but every time she went to pick up the phone, she just couldn't do it.  She rationalised that Ian really wasn't doing anything wrong.  He hadn't actually done anything to interfere with her life.  These insecurities were all her problem and she needed to work on herself before blaming anyone else.

Maya has spent much of her time while Eddy was gone, working on her school work and practising her painting skills.  She had greatly fallen behind and because of that, she began to decline all offers sent her way.  She had received a request to do a bathing suit photo shoot and to co-host at a celebrity awards show.  Eddy thought she was making a mistake, but she wouldn't allow him to change her mind.  She felt a break was greatly needed to help ease her troubled mind.
"You don't just drop out of the spotlight like that Maya.  People are easily forgotten.  Do you want to lose your celebrity status?" Eddy asked.

"Well no, but,"

"No buts Maya.  Are you in or are you out?  That is the question you have to ask yourself here."

Maya was frustrated with Eddy's reaction to her decision.  Since the third day of university she had been thrust into the spotlight in every way imaginable and she just needed a break from it all!  She was absolutely exhausted and felt no matter what she did, she just couldn't seem to catch up.  The exhaustion just persisted , which told her it was truly mental exhaustion.  Now she understood why celebrities ended up in rehab for drug use.  They probably started down that path to help them cope. The better they coped, the more they did until the drugs no longer worked and put their lives in danger.  Well, that was not going to happen to her.

The one invite she decided not to turn down was from the hospital in Sunset Valley.  The hospital was re-modelling their children's wing and had asked Maya to paint a mural in the ward.  Maya was thrilled the the invitation, because it meant that she would get to use her painting skills for a good cause.  She couldn't wait to get started.  She had arranged to do the painting over the Christmas break when school would be out for the term.  That gave her about two weeks to fully plan the mural from start to finish.  She had asked Chloe to go with her, but she was eager to go home and finally see her boyfriend, whom she hadn't seen in three months.  Maya was disappointed but understood.  It was just that she had never been anywhere on her own and she was feeling very nervous about it.  Eddy was going to be in Bridgeport for Christmas playing 3 more added shows to his extended tour.  She was really happy for him and the band but she longed to see him as well.  So when he invited her to come to his next show, she jumped at the chance.  She couldn't wait to put on a bikini and soak up some rays for the weekend.  It meant getting on a plane but she didn't mind flying and it wasn't as if she couldn't afford it.  With all her schoolwork caught up and her plan for the mural well established, she packed her bag to head off to Sunlit Tides.

Eddy had sent a car to the airport to pick her up and bring her back to the house the band was renting for the month.  They all came out to greet her when she arrived but she only had eyes for Eddy.  She leaped into his arms and kissed him soundly before he even had a chance to say hello.  The band mates behind her were all chuckling and saying hey Maya and hi Maya, but she just waved at them behind her head and kept kissing Eddy senseless.

"Well, hello!"  was all he could say when she finally let him go.  "Miss me?"

"You have no idea! I'm so glad you called and invited me.  I don't know how I would have gone another three weeks without seeing you."

"Well, maybe we should make the most of our time then." Grabbing her hand, he raced her through the house and up the stairs to the master bedroom. There it was his turn to kiss her soundly as he tugged and pulled at her clothes.

When they were both finally naked he laid her back on the bed and continued to kiss her more passionately.  Their lovemaking was frantic, born from the need of two people long missing each others touch.  When it was over, they both lay back, hearts pounding in their chests and their breathing labored from their efforts.

"Wow!" was all Maya could get out.

"Oh yeah," Eddy replied.

" Where did that come from? I mean, just, wow!"

"A man's got needs baby!  All that pent up unused energy has got to go somewhere, " he said and then laughed.

After a few minutes Maya finally said, "So.  This is the bedroom. Got a kitchen in this house?"

"Uh huh," he replied and then yawned.

"Does it have food in it?"

"I think so. I dunno,"  and then all she heard was snoring.  So she got up, dressed and went in search of some food.

She found the guys hanging out in the music room right next to the kitchen.

"Soooooo,"  said Bob.  "How's it going?" and the guys all laughed.

"We didn't hear a thing.  We swear!" continued Johnny J.

Maya face turned beat red which had the guys in another round of laughter.

"Where's Eddy?" asked Blackhawk.

"He's still in bed," Maya replied.

"Is he still breathing?" asked Bob smacking his knee.

Maya was so embarrassed that she ducked into the kitchen and went about deciding what to make for dinner.  The kitchen was really lacking so she decided on mac n cheese.  But tomorrow they would have to go out and eat because there seriously was nothing there.  She called the guys in when it was ready and at that time Eddy came down too, his hair all mussed from either the nap or their wild lovemaking, she wasn't sure.

"Howdy stud!"  said Bob and the guys all started laughing again.

Maya took that opportunity to duck out and go have a bath.  Neck deep in bubbles she had brought along, she could hear the guys laughing and joking through the floor.  When the steam and the bubbles made her too sleepy to stay awake, she drained the tub and dried off.  The guys were having a great time downstairs and had moved into the music room to practice a few of their songs.  Maya crawled into bed and fell asleep to the rhythm of the drums and Eddy's voice singing along.

The next morning Maya woke to Eddy gently shaking her shoulder.

"Time to get up sleepyhead."

"What time is it?" Maya asked.

"It's nearly nine.  You have to get up because we are going out."

"Out? Out where?"

"It's a surprise.  It's hot outside so dress lightly.  I will meet you downstairs."

While Maya took time to get washed and dressed, she could hear Eddy pacing the floor in the foyer at the bottom of the stairs.  When she finally joined him, he grabbed her hand and escorted her to the car.
"What's the rush?"  she asked.

Eddy never did answer her but drove her across town to a beautiful beach.  They started walking down and in the distance Maya could see a small gathering of people.  She was really curious until she got close enough to see what was going on.  She stopped dead in her tracks and pulled her hand from his.

"What's going on?" she asked sternly.  "That had better not be what I think it is!"

"Ok.  So it is.  But you have to listen to me.  I did this for you."

"Eddy.  I was very clear on the phone the other night.  I don't want this.  This is something I never wanted to do.  Why can't you just accept that?"

"Because I think it's just that you aren't seeing the big picture here. You can't just step out of the spotlight Maya.  Even for a little while.  It's a long hard road back once you do."

"This isn't the kind of spotlight I want Eddy.  Can't you understand that.  I don't want people to see me this way.  It's embarrassing and it's just not me."

"You're kidding right? Have you looked in a mirror lately?  Nothing there to be embarrassed about.  Look ok, you're mad.  I take responsibility for that.  But it's already set up.  Just be a good sport and go along with it anyway.  Please.  Do it for us."

Maya looked down the beach at the group standing there watching the two of them argue.

"Fine.  But I never want to go through this again.  Is that understood?"

"Yes. Yes.  Completely.  Think of it as fun.  It's going to be fun." and he started walking down the beach.

Well you can stick you fun where the sun don't shine, Maya thought to herself and started off after Eddy and to her doom.

Two hours later after Maya had been primped and fitted and had her makeup done in the dressing tent.  She was ready to begin.  She had no idea what to do or even how to find a place to start and she suddenly felt quite shy.  Eddy came up behind her and grabbed her from behind to tickle her.  The photographer started snapping photos.  It took the rest of the day to complete the photo shoot.  She had over eight clothing changes to complete the set.

When it was all done, they headed back to the house in complete silence.  Eddy kept glancing at her the whole drive home.  Maya continued to stare out her window and ignore Eddy in hopes that he wouldn't start talking.  She didn't want to fight, so she bit her tongue and fumed in silence.  When they got back to the house she immediately went upstairs to have a bath.  She locked the door, began the bath and turned to stare at herself in the mirror.  She felt positively dirty inside and out.  She never wanted to ever do that again.  She did her best to be a good sport to make Eddy happy but the whole thing just made her so mad.  She was telling the truth when she said she didn't want people to see her this way.  When she thought of celebrity life for herself, she saw elegance and admiration.  She wanted to be seen for her excellent fashion sense and for her very talented painting skills.  But not this.  She could still hear the photographer in her head as he made it very clear what he wanted.
'Be sexy.  Give me more, a little more.  Raise that leg higher, push your bottom out further, pout, give me that come hither look.  I want to feel the sex coming from you.'

Maya shivered in disgust.  She couldn't wait to get into the bath.  How could Eddy do that to her? And what exactly did he mean by "This will be good for us?"

Maya was so distraught by the time she finished her bath, she decided to skip dinner and go straight to bed, falling asleep to tears on her pillow.

The next morning, Maya woke just as the sun was starting to rise. She tiptoed from the room and went in search of breakfast.  She found the house completely silent, so when she finished she decided to take a stroll down the beach, while she contemplated what she was going to do.  She was still pretty angry with Eddy and she felt like the whole weekend had been ruined.  She thought back to that day at the lake and realized that she had been right.  Since Eddy had left to go on tour, they just weren't in sync anymore and she didn't know what to do about it.  It's like he had forgotten exactly who she really was.  The person she was without the celebrity status.  She wanted better than this for herself and he had better understand that quick.

It wasn't long before Eddy found her, sitting on a rock with her feet dangling into the water as it lapped up on shore.

"Good morning beautiful.  Sleep well?" Eddy asked her as he sat down beside her.  Maya scooted over to give him more room. After a moment of silence she finally decided to have her say.

"What were you thinking Eddy!  Did you see how that went yesterday?  That is why I specifically never wanted to do that.  What are people going to think of me now?"

"They will think of you exactly the way I think of you.  Beautiful and sexy as hell!" He started to reach for her but Maya slapped his hands away and looked at him incredulously.

"Really Eddy.  Seriously.  That is how you want people to look at me?  Look at me and see sex?  That's not who I am.  I thought you knew me better than this."

"I see you just fine princess.  It's you who I think doesn't accurately sees yourself.  You walked into my world knowing full well what it was like.  If you are going to be with me than you have to play along."

"Play along?  What does that mean?  This is my life Eddy.  My reputation. I don't see that having a lot to do with you."

"That is where you have it back ass wrong.  Everything you do reflects on me.  We work this thing together.  My fans see me and see sexy.  It's what I want."

"Well its not what I want.  I can't even look at you right now.  As far as I am concerned this entire weekend is ruined.  I'm going home!"

"Fine!  Run away.  But you will be back.  I promise you that!"

Maya ran back to the house, quickly packed her things and left for the airport.  As far as she was concerned, she didn't care right at that moment, if she ever saw Eddy Mullins again.

Midnight Sun Challenge Chapter 1.21 "Ian In The Running"

Two months had passed since Ian woke that morning to find the note on the bar and Maya gone.

Dearest Ian,

When you read this, I will be gone.  Please believe me that I never meant to hurt you but staying would only hurt us both and I felt like I had no choice.  You are a kind, loving, wonderful man and I count myself blessed that I met you that day in China.  But this isn't the life that I pictured for myself when you asked me to marry you.  I have always had dreams of living in the Western world in a busy town full of modern advances and all the world had to offer. No matter how much I care for you, if I were to stay, I would be miserable and that would not be good for either of us.  I only ask one thing from you; when you speak of me to Jin, I hope you will tell him kind things about me.  Tell him that I love him and always will.

Please forgive me,

Love Maya

He was absolutely stunned to say the least.  He knew that she was struggling a bit with the whole isolation and becoming a new mom.  But he never thought it was so bad that she would consider leaving.  Since she had left, he must have read that note a hundred times trying to make sense of it all. But in the end he focused on two things.  She loved Jin and she loved him.  He knew deep down that she did.  He couldn't just have been a matter of convenience for her.  An easy way to get out of China.  It had to be something more.

Over the past two months he had seen every article in the newspapers and magazines she was in.  She wasn't hard to find. Since she and Eddy had been dubbed Celebrity Favourite Couple, all he had to do was type her name into Simgle, and there she was. At first he was furious, and then he was just plain hurt.  If she loved him, how could she cheat on him like that?  But it also occurred to him that not once in any interview or article was there any mention of him.  No mention of anyone knowing she was married.  She was keeping him a secret, even going so far as to use her previous married name. He thought that was her way of being kind-trying to keep him out of the spotlight and those blasted paparazzi off their island.  His friends would say he was just deluding himself.  Maya was looking out for Maya.  But knowing her as he did, he didn't think that was true.  There was real regret in that note she left for him.  Like she really didn't want to leave but felt she had no choice.

When he studied the photos of her and Eddy, they just looked off to him.  In every picture, it just looked posed.  He had yet to see any evidence of anything that looked like real love.  To him it all looked like a show for the cameras.  He was really concerned that this relationship might be a publicity play on Eddy's part.  He knew that Eddy was already benefiting from it because there was such a big deal about all these new shows that had been added to his schedule.  There also was speculation reported that he had been offered a major part in a movie.  Ian wondered if Maya had also been offered any parts.

He understood now too why she avoided Jin as much as she had before she left.  She knew it would be hard and she was trying to protect them both.  Good intentions aside, it didn't work.  Jin was inconsolable after she left.  He cried for long periods of time for absolutely no reason other than he missed his mother.  He had to put his work aside and just spend all his time with him.

He taught him how to walk and talk. Read him books and played toys with him.  Jin had mastered the xylophone quite quickly and it was obvious that his talent was going to be musical.  But Ian couldn't wait to put a paintbrush in his hand, as soon as Jin was old enough to stand at an art easel.  If he was anything like his mother, he would paint beautiful paintings.

A month into Maya's leaving, Ian was commissioned to sculpt a statue out of stone for a wealthy client.  The client was so impressed that she introduced him to another wealthy client which eventually led to Ian being asked to sculpt a statue for Olivier Harbucks in Roaring Heights, of his newly adopted daughter Shirley Templeton.  The sculpture turned out truly beautiful and Olivier was so grateful that he previewed it in his annual town gala that he hosts in his home.  It made a few of the papers and garnered him quite the attention from the art world.  Ian was paid handsomely for that statue.  Enough to set him up for quite a few years.  He started receiving invitations from the art world and became known to many wealthy people.  Which led him to wiggling his way into an invitation to Collette Cohen's fashion show, just so he could be near Maya.

Sculpting gave one a lot of time to bounce ideas and issues around in one's head.  He had spent quite a bit of time mulling around all these thoughts about Maya and Eddy, Maya and himself until he finally made a decision.  He was going to fight for his wife and he was going to win.  So he made a plan to woo his wife back into his arms.  He would be subtle, yet persistent.   He had to make her believe that it was all her idea and definitely not that she was forced.  Eventually he knew that the world she had thrown herself into would lose its shine and he would be there.  It started with attending that fashion show and never letting her see him, yet letting her know he was there.  Flowers ought to do it he thought. This would be fun and ultimately it would be the ways it should have been when they first met.  He was going to make her fall deeply in love with him until she never wanted to leave him again.

And he didn't care how long it took.
